An official source said the sports ministry is pursuing the demand of medal-winning athletes for direct entry into Group 'A' and 'B' jobs in the central government with the department of personnel and training (DoPT). If the proposal goes through, sportspersons who bring laurels to the country in big international events may be offered jobs in prestigious IAS, IFS, IPS, IRS and other central services against the posts reserved for them.

"Sports quota in Group 'A ' and 'B' services will help in attracting more talent into sports," said an official, adding that at present, 5% sports quota is offered only in Group 'C' and 'D' posts. The sports ministry is also working to ensure that a minimum of 5% of seats are reserved for sportspersons for direct recruitment in Group 'C' and 'D' in central government jobs. As of now, most central government departments offer jobs to outstanding sportspersons in this category but the norm is up to 5%, with the result that fewer sportspersons get these jobs.
